WORKSHOPS & IN-SERVICES DESCRIPTIONS

DISCIPLINE

What is considered a "day" of suspension? Must a district provide services to a special education student suspended or expelled from school? If so, what services are provided and who decides? What constitutes a "change in placement" and why does it matter? Can a student who is not identified as eligible for special education still invoke special education procedural safeguards when facing disciplinary action? This workshop will address the requirements of IDEA-97 and state and federal laws relating to the discipline of special education students and will give your staff the practical information they need to know in order to implement these disciplinary provisions.

TRANSITION PLANNING

When must transition planning be addressed by the IEPT? How should transition services be referenced in the IEP? Who should be present at the IEP meeting? Who is responsible for providing the transition services? Should there be goals and objectives for transition services? What happens if appropriate transition services are not provided? This workshop will provide an overview of the legal requirements involved when addressing transition planning

MANIFESTATION IEPT'S

When must a manifestation determination review meeting be convened? Who are the required participants? How should the manifestation determination review be conducted? At the manifestation determination meeting, can the parent challenge whether the behavior subject to disciplinary action actually occurred? If the student did not have a behavior intervention plan, is the IEP and placement automatically considered inappropriate? What happens if the parent requests a due process hearing? Can a district use an interim alternative placement even if the behavior is a manifestation of the disability? This workshop will cover these questions and more as the workshop participants explore the requirements of IDEA-97 and the implementing regulations.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY

What constitutes an assistive technology evaluation? Is the district required to provide an assistive technology device at home? Who should be trained regarding the assistive technology device? The teacher? The parent? The aide? This workshop will address assistive technology concerns and the implications for school districts.
